Seeking Multiple Postdoctoral Scholars in Fisheries Science

The University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Services, seeks postdoctoral scholars in Ecosystem Modeling, Management Strategy Evaluation, and Socio-economic Analysis. The postdoctoral scholars will work to assess the performance of current and alternative management strategies for coastal pelagic species (CPS) in the California Current under a changing climate, shifting forage species composition, and varying predator populations. Successful candidates will work with a multidisciplinary team of federal and academic collaborators from UC Santa Cruz, NOAA Fisheries Science Centers (Northwest, Southwest, and Pacific Islands), and CSIRO (Australia) as part of the Future Seas Project. Details of each position and application instructions are linked below.

  • Further develop the existing California Current Atlantis ecosystem model to improve ecological dynamics of CPS, incorporating regional climate projections and species distributions
  • Test the performance of existing and proposed fisheries management strategies using the Atlantis model
  • Develop novel ecosystem-based management strategies for the CPS complex
  • Develop a management strategy evaluation for the CPS fishery under a range of uncertainty scenarios, including climate related shifts in the dynamics of forage fish, their predators, and fishing fleet dynamics
  • Work collaboratively with other researchers in multiple disciplines to develop a socio-economic model of the CPS fleet for integration to the MSE framework
  • Assist with production and interpretation of socio-economic analysis for MSE scenarios
